Doom

Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3 is the Family Circus by way of Spencer’s Gifts, a game with long, earnest quests about how damn good coffee is punctuated by gore and gun violence.
It walks by dog poop, points at it, laughs, and then sets it on fire. Borderlands 3 stay up until 11:30 pm drinking soda and googling crass Flash animations, taking detailed notes.
It makes it feel like a retro shooter rather than alive and present in modern humor and pop culture.
With Borderlands 3, a few couples of things have changed, but to little effect. It is still a Diablo-like masquerading as a shooter, now with new traversal moves, gorgeous gun models, and improved weapon feedback.
But Gearbox has done little to build on the Borderlands formula while propelling the pitch-perfect writing of Tales from the Borderlands in the bin. It’s the best and the worst of the series at once.

There are different types of troops, and a rock, paper, and scissor-like mechanic exist, but it is not just about beating type. You must have to make sure that your troops are in place ahead of time to get the full effect.

The core concept of Bad North is to travel from one island to the next, defending homes from exponentially increasing waves of invaders.
Combat revolves and spins primarily around a rock, paper, and scissors strategy of having the right types of units facing off against each other, though limited use items and commander skills can add an extra layer of agency to the player.

Shadow Tactics
Stealth-strategy games were all the rage at one point in the not-too-distant past.
Machinate a group of characters across the map, trying not to raise an alarm, killing those who ever need to be killed but only those, and coming out the other side with no one the wiser was a good play.
Shadow Tactics plays to that directly without deviation. As usual, this kind of game is almost as much a puzzler as it is a strategy. Every enemy encounter is a piece & part of a huge clockwork puzzle, all orderly and repetitive. To succeed, you need to disrupt the pattern and stop it from being monotonous.
The amusing part is creating chaos with the toy box of abilities and experimenting with them. There is a lot of joy to be found in playing around with different strategies, tearing out the best parts of failed attempts, and mending them together until you have one that finally works.
The ability and expertise to save anywhere make experimentation easier and a timer let you know when it’s been a while since you last saved.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a stealth-oriented real-time tactics/strategy video game developed by Mimimi Productions and published by Daedalic Entertainment, released on December 6, 2016.
Wargroove
Wargroove borrows heavily stylistically from older properties. If you enjoyed the pixelated wonder of Advance Wars then the lighthearted approach to tactics and strategy here is going to tickle your fancy.
The gameplay does not stop at the end of the campaign because a map and mission editor can increase your enjoyment as long as you feel creative.
From the anime-style opening showing off the different clashing commanders to the polished pixel art presentation, Wargroove is beautiful.
The animations are fluid and attacks have some decent heft & hoist behind them which makes the combat cathartic. Especially when you manage to take down some unit that has been terrorizing your scouts.
With all this simplicity, Wargroove builds a strong tactical core that forces and impels you to think.
Healthier units hit harder but with units like the warm upper or pikeman getting bonuses for being adjacent or grouping an enemy, positioning becomes more important than swarming.
Wargroove is a turn-based tactics video game developed and published by Chucklefish. It was released for Xbox One on February 1, 2019.
Mutant Zero
One of the modern innovations in turn-based strategy and tactics has been two couple it with a deep story and RPG-style character development.
Mutant Year Zero takes that and runs with it, mating an XCOM-style TBS with an RPG-style story and unit development architecture to turn out something that may not be the best TBS available but will keep you coming back for more because the story itself is interesting and engaging.
Mutant Year Zero has a great blend of sarcastic humor, grim detail, and cartoon excess, a balance inherited from its venerable pen-and-paper RPG source, Mutant.
Or, more specifically, its 2014 update, in which players take the role of mutant Stalkers wandering The Zone years after an environmental catastrophe, influx, and nuclear war have hit.
The setup gives the world a coherence that is lacking in most turn-based strategies, and you will also like its persistence: once cleared, areas remain safe.
But it also means that between fights you must ponderously and slowly run through the undergrowth in search of the scrap you will need to afford grenades and vital medikits.
The environmental detail often repays the time spent exploring, in abandoned and ditched campsites, and discovering a skeleton propped up at a bar, but I wished movement is faster so I could more quickly get to the tactics meat of the game.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a turn-based tactical role-playing video game developed by Swedish studio The Bearded Ladies and published by Funcom on December 4, 2018.
Kingdom: Two Crowns
The Kingdom games have been around for a couple of spans of years, combining resource management with a sort of linear tower defense gameplay, except rather than playing a disembodied God you are down in the mud racing back and forth on your mount giving orders.
Two Crowns have the surprising twist of multiplayer co-op along with a new Japan-themed environment in which to strive against the darkness.
With a minimalist feel wrapped in a beautiful, modern pixel art aesthetic, you play the role of a queen or king atop their horse and enter a procedurally-generated realm primed to sustain a kingdom, then toss gold to peasants and turn them into your loyal subjects in case of making your kingdom flourish.
Protect your domain at night from the greedy creatures looking to steal your coins and crown, and explore the nearby, mysterious forests to discover and stumble on curious and cryptic artifacts to aid your kingdom.
The exploration of the kingdom can lead you to look for more coins and potential resources, the areas away from the main kingdom center can become more dangerous for both the player-character and any follower.
Further, the game has a day-and-night cycle in which more harmful creatures can roam and wander around the kingdom at night, with subsequent nights becoming more and more dangerous.
Kingdom was developed by the two-man team of Thomas van den Berg and Marco Bancale. This is a strategy-based game released on December 11, 2018.
Pandemic
A co-op race against time for two to four players, the Pandemic board game tasks you with nothing less than saving the world.
A grip of diseases threatens to overwhelm civilization, so your job is simple to hunt down the cure before it’s too late. Although doing so is a matter of gathering up the right cards, winning will not be easy.
Coughs and sneezes answer to no one, and infections can tumble into neighboring cities like dominoes if too many gathers in one place.
Worse still, yet more pop up at the end of every turn. The result is a sense of urgency and panic that is like a psychological shot of espresso. You will need to move fast or be overwhelmed.
This is where most of the game’s drama can have found. Would you focus on the cure or work to keep that infection rate down? No matter what you choose, teamwork is essential and a must.
Everyone’s got a skill that may just redress the balance if used correctly (the Medic can remove all infections from a location at once, for instance), so good communication spells the difference between winning and losing.
That is what makes Pandemic one of the best cooperative and collaborative board games around; you succeed or fail together, and it will not be down to luck.
