How To Make Twitch Emotes? [ Free, Without Photoshop]

  • The first thing you need to do is prepare a Stock photo, and then run it in Adobe Photoshop. Save the photo in .psd file format, and then start working on it

  • Choose the Magic Wand Tool, and the in Option Bar, click on Select Subject; this way, the outline of your photo would be selected
  • Go to the Layers panel, and click on ‘Add a Mask’

  • Use the Pen Tool, and then draw a shape around the head of the photo; make sure to outline their chin properly, because that would be the focus of the emote on Twitch.
  • In the Layers panel, create a folder, and then drag the drawing you just created to it
  • From the Paths panel, choose ‘load path as a selection’, and then select ‘Layers’ panel
  • Click on Add Layer Mask

  • Duplicate the original layer that has the stock image
  • Delete the layer mask, and use the Pen tool to cut the subject’s hand, and repeat the same thing you did for the chin
  • Now that the Stock photo is ready, create a new document to work on the emoticon’s composition
  • Make sure that the document you create is 500×500 pixels and 72 DPI
  • Copy the head group and hand layer from the working photo file and paste it into the document you have just created
  • Rotate the head layer to 45 degrees and make sure that the hand layer is above the head
  • Open the blending options and set the blend mode to multiply, opacity to 38%, angle to 90 degrees, distance to 6px, Spread to 0%, and size to 4px.
  • Now save the file the emote file, and make sure its size settings are as per what Twitch wants
  • Go to the Channel Dashboard and upload the emote to the Affiliate or Partner Preferences

If you don’t want to use Photoshop, then you can use Gimp. However, using Photoshop, even though it might seem difficult at first is the ideal choice.

This is because, Photoshop has really cool tools, and it can help you make any kind of emote that you want to make.

  • Go to the official website of Gimp and download its free version

  • Open Gimp and then click on the File tab
  • From the drop-down menu, choose New
  • In the image size, set 112 for Width and 112 for height
  • Go to Advanced Options, and this will expand the creation menu
  • Click on ‘Fill with’ and choose Transparency

  • Open an image, and then copy/paste it on the canvas if there is an image you want to use
  • Click on the File tab
  • Choose Save as from the drop-down menu, and save it as a PNG image
  • Resize the image, and make another emote because you need three sizes for Twitch
  • When you have resized the image three times, then open Twitch
  • Click on the profile icon, then on Dashboard and you will come to a new page
  • Choose Affiliates/Partner Settings
  • Now choose Emotes, edit, and then upload the emotes that you resize on the three tabs available

The main thing to note here is that, if you are not an affiliate or partner, then you can’t customize emotes.
