Most of us just use our computer, without knowing about the different hardware parts. However, if you really want to understand what more you can do with your PC, you need to know its different parts.

Before the concept of ‘burn’ was introduced commercially, discs were available commercially for buying. However, as technology has progressed, more and more optical drive options are available to people.

In old computers, CD-ROM is the most common thing. However, now as technology has progressed, there are other options for users like DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD+R. The most common one that you will find is DVD-RW Drive.

For those who don’t know, DVD-RW drives are basically optical drives. They use the laser to read the information on optical discs, and this includes Blu-ray discs as well.

DVD RW

Most people don’t know what the full form of a DVD is; it is a digital versatile disc. DVDs can hold about 4.7GB of data, as compared to CDs that can hold as much as 700MB data.

DVDs are used for storing video files, but they can be used for storing pictures and documents as well. A DVD drive can read information from both DVDs and CDs.

Now, the RW part of the DVD; it means rewritable. The best part of these discs is that you can write on them multiple times, by erasing the original information.

It is similar to how you replace information using a hard drive. You can erase or even rewrite information up to a thousand times, and this in no way, is any type of exaggeration.

DVD-RW Drive

The next question that you should be asking is what is a DVD-RW drive? A DVD-RW drive is a drive that enables the computer to read DVDs and even CDs.

If you don’t have a DVD-RW drive on your computer, then you won’t be able to rewrite new information on your DVD-RW discs. However, if you do have a drive, then you won’t have to buy any more DVDs for rewriting information.

How do you know?

If you want to burn a CD or a DVD, then how will you know if your laptop can do that? Open the My Computer folder in your laptop, and then look for an icon that says either CD or DVD.

If there are letters RW written on the icon’s name, then you can burn CDs and DVDs. However, if the icon says DVD/CD-RW, then it can only RW the CDs and not the DVDs.

It is a fact that those who have Windows Vista, they don’t have to worry about looking for a burner. Vista was the first version of this OS, which knew how to write DVDs, something which Microsoft XP couldn’t do without the installation of a third-party program.

There are some PCs which have two CD or even DVD burners. Before burning a CD, or DVD, the user needs to tell their system, what they want to burn.

  • First, right-click on the drive and choose the option of Properties.
  • Then, click on the Recording Tab and choose the drive located in the top box.
  • Rewriting on a DVD can be really helpful for those, who do it frequently, and would like to save DVD the cost.
  • The best thing about the DVD-RW drive is that it can rewrite on DVD multiple times.
  • The user won’t have to worry about carrying a USB, or even creating more space on their PC when they can simply rewrite a DVD.
  • Moreover, this reduces the DVD clutter that most people have to go through, and they won’t have to pay much for many DVDs.
