How to Tell How Much VRAM You Have?

Do you want to know how much VRAM you have? So, you need to follow the below-mentioned trick. VRAM stands for Video Random Access Memory, and the main purpose of VRAM is to store image data for display on a computer.

It acts as a buffer between the processor of your PC and its display and is popularly known as a frame buffer. When images are sent to the display of the computer, the processor is the first to read them as data, and then it is sent to VRAM.

How to Tell How Much VRAM You Have?

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the display page and click Advanced Performance Settings.
  • Click on the highlighted text at the bottom to read the features of the display adapter for Display.
  • You’ll see your VRAM, or dedicated video memory, in your tab.

When It gets the data, then it is sent as a digital signal to an LED display; this is done either through an HDMI port or a DVI.

If the display is old and is using a cathode ray tube or if the modern display is using a VGA connector, then the video signal has to convert into analog signals by a RAMDAC, after which it is sent to a display.

Types of VRAM

There are different types of VRAM, explained below:

Multibank Dynamic RAM or MDRAM this is a high-performance RAM, which MoSys developed. It divides memory into 32-kilobyte parts and can be accessed individually.

Rambus Dynamic RAM is designed by Rambus, which contains a proprietary bus that increases the flow of data between this and a frame buffer.

Synchronous Graphics RAM is a clock synchronized, which has low-cost video memory. It is single ported but acts like dual-ported as it opens two memory pages in the same instance.

Windows RAM is not related to Microsoft Windows but is a high performing graphics this.

It is dual-ported and has about twenty-five percent more bandwidth as compared to a VRAM. The features of Windows RAM make it more efficient in reading the data. This is particularly used for high resolution.

Importance of VRAM

It is very important for gaming purposes and plays an important role in loading images. If the system doesn’t have a proper VRAM, then the images within a system won’t load properly.

There are certain levels of VRAM, which are very important for games. They run at different resolutions, because running a game at 1080p resolution, is different from running a game at 4K resolution.

  • 4k resolution requires more graphic memory. For a game to run properly, it needs a high resolution. The texture and the image of a game won’t load properly if the VRAM has low space.
  • If someone is playing 1080p games, then they need 4GB of VRAM. However, when gamers play in QHD and UHD resolutions, they usually buy an 8GB VRAM.
  • When it comes to video editing, the space is different for each resolution.

If someone is editing 720-1080p files, then they need 8GB VRAM. Most users who are editing 4K files, opt for 16 GB VRAM, and with 32 and 64 GB, professionals and users can edit all types of files.

Checking VRAM

There are dedicated graphics cards for different operating systems and every graphic card has a different amount of VRAM.

There are different methods of checking VRAM on your PC.

  1. First, go to the display settings of your computer, and you can find these display settings under the System section of your PC.
  2. At the bottom of the multiple display section, you will find ‘Display adapter properties’.
  3. Click on that option and then it will open a window containing information about the display adapter.
  4. The display adapter is another name for the graphics card on your PC.
  5. You will see a screen pop up in front of you, where you can see the adapter information.
  6. In the third last line of this information, you will see ‘dedicated video memory’.
  7. Once you have checked and noted down, you can click on OK and the window will disappear.

Using CPU-Z

If the first method doesn’t work for you, then you can use the CPU-Z.

  • CPU-Z is a third party application, which will check this, but has other features as well.
  • It can read the genes of your PC’s GPU and display all the information about it like its model number, and current temperature.
  • You can search for the software online, download the version that best suits your PC.
  • When you have installed it, wait for the software to detect the graphic card in your computer.
  • Once it has detected the graphic card, go to the Graphics tab, see the information about your GPU.
  • Those users who want a different option, they can always use the Reimage Repair tool to find out the PC’s VRAM.
  • When they scan the repositories to replace corrupted files, then they will get to know the VRAM as well.

If your PC’s performance is affected and is running slow, this could be because the VRAM is less. A more helpful guide for you: here

Most people like to play high-end games, with really amazing graphics, but what they forget is that they need to make changes in their PC accordingly. If they don’t get a high-memory graphics card, then their computer’s processor is going to suffer.

Is VRAM a graphics card?

Video RAM (or VRAM, pronounced “VEE-ram”) is a special type of RAM that works with your computer’s graphics processing unit, or GPU.

The GPU is a chip on your computer’s graphics card (or video card) that is responsible for displaying maps on your screen.
